Speech Manuscript

The wedding toast takes place at a wedding in a small private area, with close friends and relatives, and it addresses the bride, Roksolana, specifically.

For Roksolana and Michael

I will not distract you guys from your eating, dancing, and drinking for too long. I want to take a brief moment to address the beautiful couple that we are all celebrating here today. I still remember the twinkle in your eyes, Roksolana, when you first talked about meeting Michael. Obviously, as your best friend, I was skeptical of this Michael guy because I know you deserve the absolute best, so I had to make sure he right for you. There might have been some obstacles he had to overcome to win my trust. But surely he did, and I am delighted to be here today celebrating your love. First, let me speak about you, Roksolana, the gorgeous bride.

Roksolana, ever since you entered my life, you have been influencing me to be better and helping me whenever I am down. When I was scared of my first job interview and wanted to cancel it, you insisted that I can do it, and you motivated me go forward. You bring sunshine into my life at my darkest moments. Everytime I am close to giving up, you bring me back up with your wise advice and kind suggestions. Michael is more lucky than he knows that got lost in the SAT testing center five years ago. Just like you helped him find his testing area, you will guide him in your marriage and build a successful life together. In addition, you are not just positive, but you are one of the most hardworking people I know. Actually, you are the only person I know that does not procrastinate. When you have a task, you work your way through it immediately. Your persistent and hardworking quality will aid you in achieving your dream of having a happy family and a successful career. I believe that you will raise beautiful children with Michael and be a well known CEO one day. Your progress at your firm has been spectecular. No doubt you have more promotions and achievements ahead of you. Attending Baruch together has been an incredible experience, only because you made it so. Without you, Baruch would have been much more boring, because you find adventure everywhere you go. The one time we got lost on the way to Long Island, you somehow got us to Hofstra and made the road trip enjoyable. Similarly, at any party I can rely on you to make me feel more comfortable, and bring comfort when anything goes wrong. Your hardworking and positive nature has been an inspiration to me. In these past six years you have grown and helped me grow as well with your positive, hardworking, and kind personality.

Knowing that Michael is there by your side, relaxes me because he has proven to be able to care of you when you are down and to work with you to build your relationship. As I mentioned before, I was skeptical that Michael was the right man for you, but over the years he has proven to complete you. For instance, senior year of high school when we had our prom, Michael was responsible and he made the safe decision of not drinking or doing any narcotics unlike other students at the party, that is when I knew that he was one for you.

In this next chapter of your life, like two birds I believe you will build together a beautiful nest you can call your home, and I will be here by your side throughout it all.

Don’t worry, the hardest part I am sure was planning this wedding, yet you stayed collected throughout it. When the dress store sent you wrong dress, you handled that mess. When the catering company canceled a week before the wedding, together you and Michal worked it out. I believe that in similar ways you and Michael will handle anything life throws at you. You proved to be an efficient couple throughout the hardest months of planning your wedding, so I know that you will will work your way through the hardest parts of your marriage.

Everyone raise your glasses to the beautiful couple, Roksolana and Michael.

Commemorative/Performative Speech (10%): 3-5 minutes, delivered from a written manuscript

This speech calls for a less didactic speech than informative and persuasive speeches. You can pay tribute to a person close to you, a celebrity, a group of people, an institution, an event, or an idea, etc. It focuses particularly on the use of language and performance and it gives you experience in speaking from a manuscript. Commemorative Speech should be written out and delivered from a manuscript. But this does not mean that you can just read out loud; you have to make as much as eye contacts to the audience.

Manuscript

  • You do not need an outline, but you do need to submit your manuscript either before or after speech (upload an electronic copy on the Commons or submit a hard copy after your speech).
  • Even though you plan to memorize all your speech and speak without a manuscript (which is fine), you still need to submit your written manuscript.
  • Students have mostly written about 1 – 2 pages for a 3 -5 minute speech. It doesn’t matter how many pages your write–but you should practice your speech in advance to plan how fast/slow you want to read your manuscript.
  • In your manuscript, please clearly write down; [1] type of your speech [2] speech occasion [3] audience. It does not have to be long and descriptive, although it would be fun to read some of your imaginative thoughts.
    • i.e. [1] wedding toast [2] my best friend’s wedding [3] wedding guests (50 people) –you can also add more descriptions such as location (e.g. an island in Greece), who are the guest, what are you wearing, etc.
    • i.e. Situation: Elon Musk will be coming to Baruch College to deliver a special lecture on the importance of speech communication. As a student who has won the Baruch speech contest, I have a chance to introduce him to Baruch students (about 200 people) before his lecture.

Performance and Creativity will be highly evalued.
