Persuasive Speech Outline
Why We Should Recycle
Introduction
- Start with a question– How many people here use plastic/paper or metal products throughout your day? If you do have one now raise it. (Can be a coffee cup anything)
- Explain the topic– today I will be talking about recycling, Why?, What? How? Things you didn’t know could be recycled
- Bring out my recycling box– say it’s a recycling boxà when your done put those materials in the boxà now that you’ve recycled let’s understand what recycling is
Argument 1- Why?
- 80% of all products in the US are used once then thrown away
- 43% of all thrown away products include recycled materials such as paper, plastic, metal, glass
- Most of these items end up in land-fills in New Jersey/ in the Hudson River
- In New York City, we only recycle 17% of what we should actually be recycling
- 36% of all methane emissions come from landfills in the US (grownnyc.org)
- Since 2013, the amount of greenhouse gases (Methane Carbn Dioxide) has exceeded the amount of gases that were emitted in the Industrial Revolution (sciencing.com)
- The United States is the second highest pollutant of the worlds environment. China is the first (ceasepollution.com)
Argument 2- What
- Recycle- conversion of waste to re-usable material (definition from google)
- Engage with a Question– Did you ever wonder what happens to materials you recycle? Are they actually recycled?
- Marked recycled items are collected by local garbage men or authorities and sent to recycling plants
- In New York City, buildings specify garbage cans for recycled materials and those items are collected at curbs in front of buildings and are sent to Brooklyn and New Jersey
- Some recycled items are also sent to markets and recycling centers to be sold and re used
- This is part of NYC has a 20 Year Plan that outlines how to handle recyclable materials and reduce waste. This process is healthier for the environment as well
- This will cut the cost of New York taxpayer dollars from dumping our waste in landfills in other states (ex: in 2007 cost was 290 million dollars) (grownyc.org)
Argument 3- How
- There are many ways to recycle throughout the day and in different places
- At home- get a recycling bin for plastic, metal, can, paper. Also cut down on paper products that are used and opt for glass dishes. Find your garbage area and place those recyclables in their respective cans. Get a brita filter to reduce water bottles
- At work- set up bins in the workplace. Make people aware of the bins and explain why its important
- On the go- On your coffee run, take a to go cup and cut down on the plastic cups they serve. Show my cup from starbucks and explain. Swell bottle to reduce water bottles
- At stores, try to buy products such as glass bottles. Products you wouldn’t even believe like soap can be produced with recyclable materials so watch labels. Lots of products are made recyclable materials
Argument 4- Other things you didn’t know
- Almost everything you have can be recycled
- Clothes, towels and even foodà leads to less waste being dumped
Conclusion-
- Re state argument that recycling is beneficial to environment
- Question- so now whos going to start being more aware
- I hope everyone learned something from my speech
